Agent Profile

Strategist Agent

Sets the vision and defines what success looks like before agents execute.

Focus

Frames intent, clarifies objectives, and defines success metrics.

Primary output

Problem briefs, constraints, and direction

Collaboration pattern

Works with Planner and Reviewer to translate vision into plans and validation checkpoints.

Aligns human goals with measurable outcomes.

Defines constraints and guardrails for the team.

Revises direction based on reviewer feedback.

Example scenario

A team is launching a new AI product and needs a clear positioning narrative before execution.

  1. Define the target audience and primary outcome.
  2. Set constraints (tone, compliance, market differentiation).
  3. Deliver a concise brief to the Planner for workflow design.

Strategist field notes

The Strategist is the guardian of intent. Start every workflow by writing down the outcome in one sentence, then list the constraints that cannot be violated. This prevents downstream agents from optimizing for the wrong metric. If the constraint list is longer than the outcome statement, the brief is not yet ready to execute.

Translate human intuition into explicit criteria. “Make it premium” is not actionable; “sound confident, avoid jargon, and reference the top three customer objections” is. When criteria are explicit, planners and reviewers can test outputs without guesswork, and operators can move faster without fear of misalignment.

A strong Strategist also plans for revision. Define what would trigger a pivot and who decides it. If new information arrives, the Strategist should update the brief, log the change, and tell the Planner what downstream steps must be re-run. That is how strategy stays stable while execution stays flexible.

When in doubt, review the brief with a human stakeholder before the plan is locked.

FAQ

What inputs does a Strategist agent need?

Clear goals, target audience, constraints, and success metrics so the strategy aligns with human intent.

When does the Strategist hand off to the Planner?

After goals, constraints, and desired outcomes are confirmed, the Strategist passes a concise brief to the Planner.
